Launched by Brisbane's award winning community radio station, 4MBS ClassicFM, Silver Memories is a new radio service for residents of aged care facilities, isolated members of the community and, in fact, all lovers of musical nostalgia. With a strong emphasis on music of the 1920s through to the 1950s, Silver Memories broadcasts the great musicals, big bands, swing and other popular music of the past. There are singalong sessions, birthday calls, old radio serials, comedy spots, special highlights, requests and many other features to make Silver Memories a service with genuine community interaction.
Don't forget to tell us about your birthdays, anniversaries and special days so we can share them with our audience! You'll also hear 'Cheerio' calls to our listeners and some very special programs created just for Silver Memories!
The service operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and may be accessed through dedicated receiver units available from 4MBS.
The Australian Centre on Ageing at the University of Queensland is working closely with 4MBS to evaluate the benefit of Silver Memories to residents of aged care facilities. Funding for a two year year research project has been made available by the Wicking Trust.
Further support for Silver Memories, including funds required to set up appropriate studio facilities has been made available by the Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation, the Viertel Charitable Foundation as well as Brisbane City Council Liveability Committees for the wards of Dutton Park, East Brisbane, Enoggera, Grange, Marchant & Morningside. Additional donations have been made by service organisations keen to access the Silver Memories service.
We've also received generous donations from the public to assist in placing the special Silver Memories radios in aged care facilities.
Coming attractions include a great musical program for all who like to remember those fun evenings standing around the piano - it's "Sing Along With Suzie", hosted by bubbly Silver Memories announcer, Suzanne Newman. It will feature the great old songs for you to sing along with, and artists like Mitch Miller, Max Bygraves, Horrie Dargie and many other famous names!
