Handel's Theodora is a three act oratorio with an English libretto by Thomas Morrell dealing with the Christian martyr Theodora and her Roman lover Didymus - a convert to Christianity. Handel was 64 when he began working on his Theodora in June 1749 - the year after Solomon and Susanna. Theodora differs from the previous two oratorios - it's a tragedy ending in the deaths of the heroine and her lover. Theodora premiered on 16 March 1750 but played for only three performances. Despite this, it remained Handel's favorite oratio with the composer ranking the final chorus of Act 2 "far beyond" the ever-popular Hallelujah in his Messiah.
